Why does watching a timer make time feel slower?
You start a timer for a twenty-five-minute stretch of work, glance at it once, and it says four minutes have passed. It feels like it should say twelve. This is not a broken clock and not your imagination working overtime. It is a reliable, well-documented effect of the specific act of watching a number count up, and it is one of the quieter reasons a running timer makes an ordinary task feel worse than the task actually is.
A watched pot, a watched timer
The old line about a watched pot never boiling is really a claim about attention, not about water. When you have nothing to do but wait, your mind keeps returning to the one available reference point — how much time has passed — and checking in on it. Each check is a tiny event: a thought, a glance, a small disappointment that it has not moved further. String enough of those together and the stretch between them starts to feel like the main content of the wait, rather than the empty space it actually is. A timer running in the corner of your screen gives you exactly that reference point, permanently available, and permanently inviting one more glance.
Why paying attention to time changes how much of it seems to have gone by
There is a reasonably simple mechanism behind this, and it does not require anything exotic. Your sense of how much time has passed is built, in part, from how many discrete moments you can recall having noticed within that stretch. A task you are absorbed in produces very few of those moments — the moments are all about the task, not about the clock — so afterward it feels like it went quickly, even if it took an hour. A task you are timing produces the opposite: dozens of small check-ins on the number itself, each one a fresh moment your memory can log. More logged moments reads, afterward, as more elapsed time. The paradox is that watching the clock more closely makes the wait feel longer while you're in it, and often makes it feel shorter than it was once you look back — because the granular checking crowded out any sense of what you were actually doing.
The number makes it worse than a plain wait would
A pot with no lid at least only tells you it isn't boiling yet. A timer tells you exactly how far you are from done, continuously, in a format designed to be glanced at. That is worse for the same reason a progress bar that appears to stall is worse than one that simply is not there: a visible, quantified gap between where you are and where you are trying to be gives your attention somewhere specific and slightly discouraging to land, over and over, for as long as the task runs. The number is not neutral information sitting quietly in the corner. It is a standing invitation to check your progress against a target, and every check is a small withdrawal from whatever attention the actual task was getting.
The pace question adds a second layer
Once a number is running, a second question tends to show up alongside "how much time has passed": am I on pace? A timer implicitly asks you to compare elapsed time against however long the task was supposed to take, even when nothing about the task actually requires that comparison. Twelve minutes into a twenty-five-minute block, roughly half the number has gone by, and now there is a faint pressure to have roughly half the work done too — a standard the task itself never set, invented entirely by the shape of the countdown. That pressure is where a lot of the low-grade tension around timed work comes from: not the task, but the arithmetic the running number keeps performing next to it.
What removes the effect is not discipline — it is removing the number
None of this is really fixable by trying harder to ignore the timer. Telling yourself not to check it is itself one more thought about the timer. The effect goes away when there is nothing counting, not when you get better at resisting the thing that is counting. A log has no running total to glance at while you work, because nothing is being measured while the work happens — there is just the task, and a line written down once it is over or once something changes. There is no pace to be behind on, because nothing was ever timed to a target in the first place.
