Does tracking your time change how you spend it?
Start a timer before you do something and you have not just started measuring it — you have quietly changed what it is. The activity now has an observer built into it, and the observer is you. This is worth taking seriously, because it means the number a tracker hands back afterward is not a neutral record of what would have happened anyway. It is a record of what happened while being watched, and those two things are not reliably the same.
Watching something changes it, including your own day
People behave differently when they know they are being observed, even when the observer is themselves. A meeting runs a little more formally when someone is taking minutes. A workout gets a little harder when a heart rate number is visible on the wrist. None of this requires anyone to be watching on purpose — the mere presence of a measurement, held in your own awareness, is enough to nudge the thing it is measuring. A running timer puts exactly this kind of awareness on your afternoon, for the entire length of the afternoon.
This is not a flaw in any particular app. It is what measurement does whenever the thing being measured is a person who knows the measuring is happening. A thermometer does not change the temperature by reading it. A person almost always changes their behaviour a little by knowing it is being read.
A running timer keeps the watching going the whole time
The difference between a glance and surveillance is duration. Checking the clock once, out of curiosity, barely registers — it is over before it can change anything. A timer running in the background of a task is a different kind of presence: it does not check in once, it stays on, quietly counting, for as long as the task lasts. You do not have to look at it for it to have an effect. Knowing it is running is enough, in the same way knowing a room has a camera in it changes how people act in the room whether or not anyone glances at the lens.
This is also why the effect gets worse the longer a task takes. A five-minute timed task barely has time to become self-conscious. A three-hour one has plenty of time to drift from "doing the work" into "doing the work in a way that will look right when the timer stops," which are not the same activity even though they can look identical from outside.
What actually changes when the clock is on
The shifts are small individually and add up to something real. People stretch a task slightly to avoid a number that looks too short and therefore suspiciously easy. They cut a break short because the break is visibly eating into the total. They do the tidy, presentable version of a task instead of the messy, real one, because the messy version — false starts, staring into space, redoing something twice — reads badly next to a clean number. None of this is dishonesty. It is just what happens to behaviour that knows it is being recorded in real time: it edits itself for the recording, a little, without asking permission first.
The odd result is that the number you end up with is not more accurate for having been measured continuously. It is a number produced by a slightly different, slightly stiffer version of the same afternoon — one that spent part of its attention managing how it would look, rather than just happening.
Why writing a line after the fact does not do the same thing
A log entry is not immune to self-consciousness either — anything you write down about yourself can turn into a small performance if you let it. But it differs from a running timer in one structural way: it is not present while the activity happens. There is no clock ticking in the corner of your attention as you work, because there is no clock at all. The observing, such as it is, happens afterward, in a single short moment of writing a sentence — and a moment is not the same kind of pressure as a duration. You cannot self-consciously perform an afternoon in advance of describing it later; by the time you sit down to write the line, the afternoon has already happened, un-supervised, exactly as it would have happened if you never planned to write anything down about it at all.
This is the actual argument for logging over timing, and it is a different one from the usual complaint about forgetting to press start. The problem with a running timer is not only that it is easy to forget. It is that remembering to keep it running is exactly what turns the activity into something being performed for an audience of one, for as long as the clock stays on.
This does not mean measurement is bad
Some things genuinely benefit from being watched while they happen — a pace you are trying to hold in a race, a rate you are billing against, a rehearsal you are timing against a hard limit. In those cases the observer effect is not a side effect, it is the point: you want your behaviour to respond to the number in real time. But that is a narrow, deliberate use of a clock, chosen for a specific task. Most of an ordinary day is not that kind of task. Most of it is just being lived, and living it under continuous observation, even self-imposed, changes the living more than most people notice until they compare a timed week against an untimed one.
